Another SHTF Vehicle...........

Yep, got another one as a backup. This 1979 GMC Jimmy (High Sierra) is my daily driver. I sold my other car and currently have no loan whatsoever. So for those who are critical about gas mileage, keep in mind I don't pay Wells Fargo anything !!!
HA ! ........put that one in your pipe and smoke it. As for those smarter than me with a car or truck that's paid for then kudos to you, I'm now part of da club !

TAD,
You need to add a pickup truck to haul loads that won't fit in the back of the Blazer. Trust me. I've already used mine a bunch of times last summer. Still love my Blazer as the daily driver though.

Love the trucks. And yeah, we only pay cash for vehicles. We have a friend that buys his vehicles on his credit card (no more than $2000). Runs them till they drop, then does it again. He pays the card off immediately. But it does give him some leeway at auto auctions, etc.

Even when it was the wife's brand new Subie five years ago. Paid cash. No payments. Just a title. Pay the insurance, keep up with the maintenance and keep her full of fuel. That's all we do.

Now, make sure you've got some fuel stored away. Now that you're not making that monthly payment, you will find a lot of OTHER uses for that money.

LOVE the new truck. How does she run?

Yep, both were found on Craigslist. The red one is from OK and the blue one here in TX. Both are Southern K5's which helps when looking for one that has very little rust.

Yep, fuel storage is in the works and on the list.

Truck runs great after I did a carb tune-up. It's still a bit lean and need to look at upsizing the jets on the edlebrock carb. I bought a spare carb just like it for a backup. Looks are deceiving from the pics and got a great deal because the dash was torn apart (no gauges / intruments and no vents). Paid $2400 cash..........and have a few little things to fix here and there.

Welcome to the club... all I gotta do is get me a bigger vehicle. 4 Cylinder Dakota is just a bit too small for my liking, but it does great on gas.

nice GO vehicles there AD
when TSHTF and it's GO TIME, i'd rather have " go anywhere " mobility than worry about a few extra mpg

i'm assuming you already have alternative routes mapped out away from the main roads

It's called a New WORLD Order... where are the Out-Bugs going to go to get away from TPTB?

If TSHTF in earnest I don't need to go anywhere my feet can't take me. I have what I need to survive right where I'm at.

PS - I have thought about getting an electric ATV or Vectrix scooter.

My neighbors are on hydropower and have a little more power than they need. They have been thinking about an electric golf cart or something similar. Are there any 4x4 electric vehicles out there?

It weighs as much as a VW bug. I like the ground clearance and high driver position, but that puts the batteries up high. Selectable 2WD-4WD would mean easier steering. They don't give much info on their site.

Yes sir, absolutely :ok:........oh and about the 'pickup' comment, this K5 does not have the back seat so for now it's a covered pickup. Later, I might check into getting a real pickup if I can find a good one on the cheap..........but then again, all I need to do is remove my top (see below for an example).

http://www.off-road.com/trucks4x4/da...670/jones2.jpg << Mine does this too, from the cab back it's open without the top.

Here's another pic with the tires that came on this beast (35" street type BFG all-terrains). The first photos show 38" Super Swamper TSL's. Oh and no the top of the front grille does not 'swirl' like that - no defect, just me getting crazy with editing trying to 'blurr' the license plate.

Don't buy the dash from LMC trucks. They are now ONLY selling cheap chinese knock offs that don't fit at all. You can still get them from Chevy dealer. NOT CHEAP at six bills, but definitely OEM. Comes in the box.

Now if THAT'S too much, here's a guy that has two of them. The only problem is that he's in GA and you're in TX and he says 'pickup only'. BUT if you paid UPS to fill out the pickup sheet and then had them pick up both boxes YOU MIGHT get two for less than the price of one.

http://www.steelsoldiers.com/vbclass...?do=ad&id=3223

If you only need ONE, I'd consider springing for the second one. We could just have UPS fill out TWO way bills. One to you, one to me.

Here's a couple of pix of a Blazer with it's top removed for painting. GREEN of course...

Yeah and in TEXAS you are not even a MAN without at least ONE 4x4 in your driveway.

If you don't have a large, fire breathing 4x4 in your driveway and you aren't a man, what are you?

I thought his pic was funny though on the 'crude' and 'ugly' side.

Wallew - As for the 'actual' dash pad, it came with one in excellent shape and almost new. I've already purchased guages and have them installed and upgraded to an in-dash stock factory Tach ! The speedo still needs to be hooked up but the tach works great. Originally this Jimmy had a stock vacuum cruise control which I'm not fond of at all. Items that still require re-assembly and hook-up are the A/C vents & tubes, air and heater controls, glove box, dash trim, instrument panel bezel, and a few other details on the interior. This whole project has taken a good bulk of my free time over this past month but it's very worthwhile considering my overall low costs into this truck.

I like your paintwork photos - that is awesome !!! :coolbeer:

You have the FACTORY TACH?

I hate you.

Not that it really makes any difference, my diesels wouldn't be able to fit that tach anyway.

But dang man. That's not only rare, but extremely hard to find.

Great job. I WANT PIX OF THE DASH WHEN YOU ARE DONE. BTW, did you know you can paint the vinyl of the dash to match any color you want? I did mine in their original kind of 'dirt brown'. Came out great. The factory replacements were grey.

Not really, Im still in Northern Michigan but both here and in S. Colorado where im going , these types of vehicles are like hot rods in the city. they get noticed, but more admired than with suspicion.
